TIMELINE: MAY

Mother’s Day is a very special project, here at the Little Fighters Cancer Trust. While all mothers deserve a medal, these Onco-Moms are Superheroes in our eyes as they often have to spend weeks or even months on end sitting (and sleeping) at their ill child’s bedside in the hospital and out…

Resources (product and financial) permitting, we LOVE doing a special Mother’s Day event at every hospital ward for the mothers in the ward with their ill child on Mother’s Day. We take caterers, set tables, serve them a decent lunch, and ensure each mother gets flowers, a nice gift and a card.

Treating Oncologists will, over weekends like Mother’s Day weekend, or other special days, always try and send as many as possible of the children in their care home, so that they can be with their families. The only children who will be in the hospital wards on days such as Mother’s Day are those who are really sick, or who live too far away and cannot afford to go home and come back for treatment mere days apart.

So, on Mother’s Day, it truly is the Mothers who are in the hospital wards because their child is extremely ill – who receive no visitors, no gifts and no cards – who are the focus of our Mother’s Day Project, making it a really very special privilege for us.

Where possible, we also acquire the services of hairdressers, manicurists, masseurs, etc. (donations in kind) to really spoil the moms…

Of course, we cannot just take the Mommies something, so we also include gifts for the female staff on duty on the day, and each child in the paediatric oncology ward also gets a lovely snack-pack and a soft toy…

Product Donations Needed for this Project:

  • Flowers
  • Gift bags filled with deodorant, body lotion, lipstick, nail polish, a pretty notebook and pen, a box of chocolates, a card… and any other small treat…
