This year the Little Fighters Cancer Trust is doing things a bit differently when it comes to our regular projects, and the first of these changes is that we will be combining our Barefoot for a Day and Snug as a Bug Projects into one big project.
In both of the projects we ask for donations from the public, which are sorted and packed at our HQ and sent out to our Representative in the various provinces, who then distribute the shoes and clothing to Children with Cancer in the Pediatric Oncology Hospital Wards and Oncology Clinics around the country.
Our Little Fighters have greatly impaired immune systems due to the cancer as well as the ravages of the Chemotherapy and Radiation Treatments, so we can only accept NEW shoes and NEW clothing for these projects. (We do, however, accept donations of second-hand clothing and other goodies throughout the year for sale in our Pre-Loved Goods Charity Shoppe.)
We are starting the Drive early this year to ensure that we have enough time to collect sufficient shoes and warm winter clothing for all our Children with Cancer.
All donations need to be in Paarl by the first week in March to ensure that they can be sorted and packed and sent to the various regions for delivery mid- to -end March.
If necessary we can organise for our wonderful transport company, Kargo, to collect from you – with no charge to you at all.

Snug as a Bug

The LFCT Snug as a Bug Project came about as a result of increased requests to our organisation to provide Children with Cancer with clothing. Many of the families that are affected by Childhood Cancer are very poor and struggle on a daily basis, and this disease just puts an additional financial strain on them on top of all the stress of the cancer itself.
Many of these young children lay shivering in their hospital beds because their families cannot afford to buy them warm clothing, pajamas etc which are vital as they get very cold during treatment.

The list of needs for this Winter is:

  • Winter Fleecy Tops: Boys and Girls, Sizes: 2-3 years; 4-5 years; 6-7 years; 8-9 years, 9-10 years
  • Winter Long Pants: Boys and Girls, Sizes: 2-3 years; 4-5 years; 6-7 years; 8-9 years, 9-10 years

Barefoot For A Day

The idea behind the Barefoot for a Day initiative, which was started by the Drakenstein Transformation Team, is to inspire communities to Give and to Work Together. This initiative has also taken hold in schools over that past few years, where, on the last day of class, the matriculants leave their shoes behind on their desks for distribution to the needy.
People from the communities are encouraged to go to school, church or work as per normal, dressed as they would on any other day, and then doff the shoes that they are wearing and donate them to the Barefoot for a Day initiative while actually going barefoot for the rest of the day!
The idea behind going barefoot for the entire day is for it to serve as a reminder of how uncomfortable it is for those who do not have the blessing of a pair of shoes.
LFCT linked into this project in 2013, but with a bit of a twist, as Children with Cancer cannot be gifted second-hand shoes due to their impaired immune systems – the shoes that are gifted to LFCT for our Little Fighters, are therefore NEW shoes.

While donations of shoes are most welcome (ALL types of WINTER shoes for girls and boys ages 0-10),  we also accept financial contributions because that way we can utilise our NPO and PBO status to buy in bulk and because we can haggle with stores for discounts and better deals, we can purchase more shoes.
Financial donations also ensures that we are able to buy the correct sizes and types of shoes that we need for our Little Fighters, thereby ensuring that each Little Fighter gets the exact shoe they need and which fits them perfectly.

Please ensure that all shoes/donations reach us by 09 March so as to afford us sufficient time to sort & pack/purchase shoes in time for our deliveries across South Africa.
