For those of you who have been wondering what happened with regards the Crazy Nomad EPIC JHB to CT Fundraising Tour in aid of LFCT, here are all the details….
It has taken a long time to write this wrap-up post because our wonderful Team Crazy Nomad were still busy with various things and some of you wonderful peeps were still donating.
In the Beginning…
Around the middle of September last year LFCT received an e-mail from Jason Doyle, aka Crazy Nomad, saying that he had a wonderful fundraising idea – he wanted to do a fundraising ride from Johannesburg to Cape Town (approximately 1 400 kms) ON A MOTORISED BICYCLE!!!!
Well, whenever anyone wants to donate or fundraise for our Little Fighters, we do not let the grass grow under our feet, and within a day or two Jason had what he needed from us and a Back-a-Buddy page was set up….
A Bit of Background
Jason has a background in Transport, Crane Truck Hire, a Liquor Store, and production in the engineering field. In 2017 he was held up at gun point in the liquor store and was very fortunate to walk out alive. Following this he had a stroke and realised that a big change was needed.
Jason discovered motorised bicycles, and to coin a phrase, “the rest is history”…
He recently got married and will be immigrating to Poland, but wanted to do an Africa ride before he goes…
Tony is also married, has done quite a few things in his life and is currently involved in the home security field but is also ready to spread his wings and take on new challenges. Tony’s sister’s son has been diagnosed with childhood cancer, and this made this challenge/fundraiser very personal for him.
On the Way….
On the 15th December, Jason and his good buddy Tony Visser departed with much pomp and good wishes from Melrose Arch, Johannesburg.
The plan was for the ride to take 15 days and to arrive in Cape Town on 30 December, but as we all know, “the best laid plans of mice and men”…
Thanks to some wonderful live videos, pics and the WhatsApp group, Jason and Tony kept everyone from Cape Town to Cairo and beyond regularly updated as to what, where, when and how….
Never Give Up…
If there were ever two men that epitomised this mantra then it is Team Crazy Nomad…
They made good time each day despite having to keep off the major highways due to their motorised bicycles only having 60cc engines (which means LOTS of pedalling) and dealing with some really bad gravel roads. Below are some notes posted by the boys themselves and some other interesting tidbits…
The first in-person-donation of the Epic Tour came from a young man called Benjamin van Wyk on 16 December. What makes this our favourite donation is that this was R10 given by someone who really could not afford it but who sees the good that is being done and understands the need to support Children with Cancer and their Families.
This moment just became the best part of my trip. These lads in Heilbron, Free State, just donated R10 for #littlefighterscancertrust. This is what this trip is all about. Please see link below to follow the example of #Benjaminvanwyk
First Bike Failure
Tony’s clutch bearing has popped. Sitting waiting for spares and Chris, a guy we just met brought us some beer. See when something bad happens, the world finds the balance, thanks Chris
This was sorted and once again the intrepid duo were on their way….
Another puncture, assisted by the Free State’s friendly farmers you guy rock thanks for the fresh bore hole water
Thanks Bike Bar and Zoot and everyone else in Bloemfontein for the donations and for helping our intrepid travelers out. BLOEM ROCKS!!!! Bloemfontein has been great, thanks to everyone for their hospitality. XXX Bike Bar were kind enough to donate to #littlefighterscancertrust and Zoot, what a character, thank you for your donation, the beers and giving us your back yard to camp. There have been so many donations from #bloemfontein @ Bloemfontein, Free State
Night in Jail
23 December 2018 – The #CrazyNomad duo are in jail 👀 Spending the night in the old Phillpolis Jail – a REAL BED for sore and very tired bodies… Have a great sleep Guys!!
Justin and Tony take us on a very interesting tour of the old jail….
Unfortunately on 24 December Tony’s bike suffered a major motor problem and it was all hands on deck to get this resolved.
The guys were stranded in Phillipolis on the 24th as Tony’s motor was cooked – Des from #soekoebicyclecompany and Zoot who they only met (and stayed over at his posse) a few days ago came to the rescue and a motor was sourced from Bloemfontein and brought to the guys in Phillipolis by #Zoot – WAY TO GO DES & ZOOT🍻🍻
While everyone was enjoying the Christmas lunches and time with family, our intrepid duo were on the road, having slightly changed their route due to the gravel roads messing the bikes up too much.
The made Colesberg yesterday and will continue on this amazing trip of theirs today >>>> Cape Town here we come!!!
Broken in THREE
Unfortunately the trials and tribulations were not yet over and Tony’s bike suffered yet another problem – it literally broke in three!!! AS luck would have it though, Dr…. from …. who owns a farm nearby happened to pass by at that moment and jusmped into action – lifted Tony to his farm, gave the boys a fantastic dinner and a place to sleep and also provided a workshop and tools for Tony to weld his frame together again.
Wonderful South Africans
The one thing that both Jason and Tony kept on mentioning is the fantastic people who they met on their epic road trip – everyone was friendly and went out of their way to help wherever they could – free accommodation, diners, donations, help with various things, and of course LOADS AND LOADS of beer (the boys rode throughout a gruelling heatwave… through the Free State and the Karoo in mid-summer…)
Hannes and Inanca van Der Merweville. 19/12/18
Not only did they allow us to stay on their farm, they invited us into their home for dinner and made a donation. What an amazing young couple. This is what makes me proud to be South African and to be doing this trip.
Team Crazy Nomad laughed, they sang, they communed with nature, and when we shared the news with them that one of our Little Fighters, Amy, had gained her angel wings, they cried with us.
The Cape of Good Hope
After 20 days of hard riding, 1903 kilometers (due to enforced rout changes), a few breakdowns, some injuries and various other challenges; with the support of many generous strangers on the way and the support of family and friends all over the world and lots and lots of frosties, Team Crazy Nomad 2018 eventually arrived at the Blue Peter in Blouberg at around lunch-time on 3 January, 2019 and we actually got to meet!!!
Blouberg Table Mountain
Before I began this trip I have imagined this picture, it’s amazing to realize this dream and the way we have done it.
CT Adderley St – First ever Motorised bicycle ride from Jo’burg to Cape Town
The guys did not stop there… they went on to Hout Bay and Simonstown and various other burbs and continued to spread awareness and fundraise wherever they went – TEAM CRAZY NOMAD ROCKS!!!!!
Our grateful thanks go out to Team Nomad 2018, Jason and Tony
