Hey there Fans – it is Foodie Friday again so, following on our post about the health and cancer-fighting benefits of cardomom yesterday, here are some great cardomom recipes that both you and your Child with Cancer are sure to thoroughly enjoy!

Elaichi Chaa (Indian Cardamom Tea) Recipe

Prep time : 5 mins | cook time : 5 mins | serves : 2 cups

  • Cardamom – 3 pods
  • Milk  – 2 cups
  • Sugar – as needed
  • Tea powder – 1 tsp


  1. Crush cardamom pods to coarse level and keep aside
  2. Bring the milk to a boil – once it starts boiling, add the tea powder, crushed cardamom, and sugar.
  3. Allow it to boil for 2 mins and drain through a filter or tea strainer
  4. Enjoy hot with biscuits or buns

Add more cardamom or use less according to taste. You can use normal cow’s milk or you can make this drink richer by using coconut or almond milk. 


Masala Chai Tea

Prep Time: 5 mins    |  Cook time: 10 mins    |  Serves: 1

  • 3/4 cup watergolden-masala-chai-tea-e1458588535847
  • 2-4 whole green cardamom pods, smashed
  • 1-2 thin slices fresh ginger
  • 1 1-inch cinnamon stick
  • 1 piece star anise
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons loose black tea leaves
  • Sweetener, to taste (I prefer honey or maple syrup)


  1. In a small saucepan, combine the water, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon stick and star anise.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil then lower the heat and simmer for a few minutes until the mixture is fragrant.
  3. Add the milk and tea leaves, and simmer for another minute then turn off the heat and let steep for 2 minutes.
  4. Pour into a cup through a fine mesh sieve. Discard the leaves and spices.
  5. Add sweetener, to taste.

If you want deeply flavourful tea in the morning, follow these alternate directions starting the night before.

In a small saucepan, combine the water, cardamom, cinnamon stick and star anise. Do not add the ginger yet. Bring to a boil then turn it off and cover the pan. In the morning, add the sliced ginger and bring to a boil then lower the heat and simmer for a few minutes until the mixture is fragrant. Add the milk and tea leaves, and simmer for another minute then turn off the heat and let steep for 2 minutes. Pour into a cup through a fine mesh sieve. Discard the tea and spices. Add sweetener, to taste.

Tahini Cardamom Smoothie Recipe

Prep Time: 5 mins    |  Blend time: 5 mins    |  Serves: 1


  • 1 cup non-dairy milk
  • 1 frozen banana, peeled
  • 2 pitted dates, fresh or soaked
  • 2 Tablespoons sesame tahini
  • 1/4 tsp. cardamom, freshly ground
  • pinch of salt


  1. Blend well in a high-speed blender.
  2. Enjoy!

You can use coconut milk or almond milk instead of cow’s milk to make this smoothie for an even more nutritional drink.

Cardamom-Honey Roasted Baby Carrot Recipe


  • ½-pound baby carrots, greens removed (except for the bottom bit if desired)cardamom-honey-roasted-baby-carrots
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt


  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F, and adjust a rack to the center.
  2. Peel the carrots and place them on a baking sheet.
  3. In a very small bowl mix the honey with the oil, cardamom and salt.
  4. Use a pastry brush (or your fingers), to thinly coat the carrots with a bit of the honey mixture. (Keep the rest on hand for basting.)
  5. Place the baking sheet in the preheated 400 degree F oven and roast the carrots — basting them every 8 minutes or so, until they are very tender, about 25 minutes. Remove them from the oven and baste a final time so they’ll be shiny for a pretty presentation.
  6. Serve!


Pumpkin Zucchini Bread with Cardamom Recipe

Prep Time: 20 mins    |  Cook time: 60 mins    |  Serves: 12

  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup grated zucchini (1 small zucchini)
  • 1 small ear of corn (about 1/2 cup)
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups AP flour
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease bread pan with cooking spray.
  2. In medium bowl, mix together pumpkin puree, eggs, sugar, olive oil, vanilla, zucchini, and corn.
  3. In small bowl, mix together flour, cardamom, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
  4. Mix together the wet and dry ingredients. Pour in a bread pan, and bake for 45 minutes to one hour. You may have extra batter you can place in a muffin pan.
  5. Let cool and Enjoy!

We hope that you enjoy trying out these nutritional and tasty recipes and that they help your child eat a bit better and also inspire you to try out more recipes of your own using cardamom. Cardamom can be bought in most supermarkets and/or spice shops either in pod or powder form.
